The metallic element iron in its pure state is silvery-white, but iron usually appears brown or black in colour because of oxidation of the surface of the metal. The reddish colour of soil is due to iron.  Iron is an essential nutritional micro-nutrient needed for formation of the oxygen-carrying red blood pigment, haemoglobin.
